The Art of Slowing Down in India

How Rajasthan taught us that the most memorable moments so often begin while waiting.

The Art of Slowing Down in India

It begins before dawn.

A distant thud. Rhythmic, unhurried.

A neighbour grinding cardamom while the sky is still dark, preparing the first chai of the day.

Then, a little later, the peacocks.

Their calls carry across the stillness as the first light begins to touch the horizon.

The Art of Slowing Down in India

India is often described through superlatives: the largest, the busiest, the loudest, the fastest-growing.

For many visitors, the experience begins with movement. Flights, trains, markets, cities, and endless streams of activity. There is always another destination to reach, another monument to see, another item to cross off a list.

And yet, the India we have come to know reveals itself differently.

Not through speed.

Through stillness.

The Art of Slowing Down in India

Not by rushing from one place to the next, but by noticing what lies in between.

Over the years, Rajasthan has taught us this lesson again and again.

Some of our most memorable experiences began while waiting. Waiting for a craftsman to finish weaving a charpai in a village workshop. Waiting for tea to arrive during a conversation that gradually expanded from business to family, from family to local history, and eventually to life itself. Waiting for the heat of the day to soften before continuing a journey.

What first appeared to be a delay often became the most memorable part of the day.

A recommendation was quietly shared. An introduction was made. A story emerged. Sometimes, an entirely new direction followed.

The Art of Slowing Down in India

These moments rarely appear in guidebooks. They cannot be scheduled or manufactured. They emerge when there is enough space for them to happen.

This is what we mean when we speak about slowing down.

Not doing less. Not withdrawing from the world. But paying closer attention to it.

India rewards this approach. The longer you stay, the more you notice: the rhythm of a neighbourhood before the city wakes, the sound of craftsmen beginning their work, the way conversations unfold differently when there is no urgency to end them, and the stories hidden within objects, buildings, and traditions that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

Our name comes from the charpai, the simple woven bed found across the Indian subcontinent for generations. More than a piece of furniture, it has long been a place for conversation, hospitality, rest, and connection. A place where people gather. A place where stories are shared. A place where time seems to move a little more slowly.

The Art of Slowing Down in India

For us, the charpai represents a way of engaging with the world. A reminder that meaningful relationships take time to build. That craftsmanship deserves patience. That understanding a place requires more than simply passing through it.

These ideas continue to shape everything we do. When sourcing objects, we focus on relationships before transactions, taking the time to understand the people, skills, and traditions behind what is being made. When designing spaces, we look beyond aesthetics to consider the stories, materials, and craftsmanship that give a place its character. When creating journeys, we encourage curiosity, conversation, and unexpected encounters rather than rushing from one highlight to the next.

Different activities. The same philosophy. A belief that the most valuable discoveries often happen when we allow ourselves the time to notice them.

India continues to evolve rapidly. Yet amidst this change, certain reminders remain. A workshop where techniques are passed from one generation to the next. A family gathered together in an evening courtyard. A charpai beneath a neem tree. A conversation that begins unexpectedly and ends hours later.

These moments may seem ordinary. Yet they are often the moments we remember most.

Perhaps that is what inspires us. Not to move through India more slowly for the sake of slowing down, but to create enough space for meaningful encounters, thoughtful craftsmanship, and unexpected stories to emerge.

Because whether we are sourcing, designing, or travelling across Rajasthan, our work begins in much the same way. By sitting down. By listening. And by allowing enough time for a story to unfold.
